Five college students were injured when their speeding SUV crashed into a guardrail, which pierced through the centre of the vehicle near Rajghat in north Delhi early Thursday, police said.
The Hyundai Venue, carrying five passengers, four of whom were students from Delhi University, was returning from a birthday party at a pub in Gurugram. All five have been hospitalised, the police confirmed.
Initial investigations suggest that the car was being driven at a high speed, and the driver lost control, leading to the accident. The crash occurred on the road between Shanti Van and Geeta Colony, police added.
Ashwani Mishra, 19, a first-year student at Delhi University’s Dyal Singh College, had rented the vehicle for a night to celebrate his birthday.
Mishra, along with Ashwani Pandey, 19, and Keshav, 20, all residents of Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi, Krishna, 18, from Saket, and Ujjawal, 19, from Chhatarpur in south Delhi, went to ‘Zee Town’, a pub in Gurugram, on Wednesday night.
On the return trip, Mishra was driving, the police said.

“While crossing the Geeta Colony flyover, Mishra became distracted while changing the song on his mobile phone and lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision with the railing,” police said in a statement.
Mishra, Pandey, Keshav, and Krishna are students at Delhi University, while Ujjawal is enrolled at a private college.
All five were admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital in Delhi, with the condition of Mishra and Pandey reported as critical, the police said.
