Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the creation of more than 3,200 posts in the Delhi prisons department and directed that they be filled within six months, Raj Niwas officials announced on Thursday.
The 3,247 new positions include roles such as superintendent, deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent, head warder, head matron, warder, section officer, accounts officer, assistants, and drivers, the officials said.
In addition, the lieutenant governor has approved the restructuring of the prison cadre and instructed that timely staff promotions be ensured to maintain motivation, they added.
The new posts will be allocated across various jails under the Delhi prisons department, including Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini. They encompass appointments in Groups A, B, and C across different cadres, including jail, technical, and ministerial roles.

The process began with the prisons department proposing the new posts, addressing current shortages and future needs, and having the proposal vetted by the administrative reforms department. Financial implications were then reviewed and approved by the finance department.
A meeting was held on August 7 to discuss the proposal, which was then moved for LG approval on August 21. Following this, the lieutenant governor approved the creation of the posts with the directive that they be filled within six months, the officials added.
