Celebrating its 21st anniversary, Delhi Metro, which inaugurated operations with a modest 8.4-km line in December 2002, has evolved into a lifeline for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The journey began with the inauguration by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, launching the first stretch from Shahdara to Tis Hazari on the Red Line.

Over two decades, the Delhi Metro has grown exponentially, boasting a network of 393 km and 288 stations. Carrying over six million passengers daily, it stands as one of the largest mass transit systems globally.

In the past year alone, the Delhi Metro achieved significant milestones. Operating the Airport Express Line at a remarkable speed of 120 kilometers per hour, it reduced travel times between stations, making the commute more efficient. The total journey from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 now takes approximately 21 minutes, down from 22 minutes, saving valuable time for commuters.

Noteworthy innovations in digital ticketing solutions have made ticketing more convenient, including compliance with the National Common Mobility Card system and the introduction of QR code-based ticketing. ‘Momentum 2.0,’ launched on November 1, redefined the commuting experience by offering integrated QR ticketing, e-shopping options, digital lockers, smart utility payments, and last-mile connectivity through a user-friendly app.

Delhi Metro also introduced ‘CarbonLite Metro Travel,’ informing passengers about the CO2 emissions saved during their journeys compared to road-based vehicles. This initiative promotes sustainable public transport and raises awareness about the environmental impact of choosing the metro.

Setting a record on September 4, 2023, Delhi Metro recorded 71.03 lakh passenger journeys, marking the highest ever for the mass transit system. This achievement demonstrates the metro’s resilience and its reinstatement as the backbone of mass transportation in the NCR despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As Delhi Metro commemorates its 21st year, the journey is not just about connecting stations but symbolizes a commitment to growth, innovation, and the seamless integration of technology for the millions who rely on this iconic transportation network.
