Delhi: Okhla underpass waterlogged, traffic movement restricted

On Saturday, a 60-year old man drowned in the water at Okhla Underpass in Delhi following heavy rain on Friday

The Delhi Traffic Police imposed restrictions on vehicular movement through the Okhla underpass on Sunday due to waterlogging, advising commuters to plan alternate routes.

This decision follows the tragic drowning of a 60-year-old man in the underpass on Saturday amidst heavy rainfall in the national capital over Friday and Saturday, causing widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across various parts of the city.

In a statement posted on social media, the traffic police said, “Traffic movement at Okhla underpass is restricted due to waterlogging. Please plan your travel accordingly”.

The closure of the underpass has disrupted regular commuter routes, significantly extending travel times. Sonu Gupta expressed surprise at the underpass unusual flooding, noting the closure of the road above the underpass as well. “I had to redirect my journey to Crown Plaza due to this unexpected change”.

Another commuter, Rajesh Kumar, recounted his ordeal of being stuck in hours-long traffic jams near the underpass on both Friday and Saturday, prompting him to seek alternative routes.

Meanwhile, a widely circulated video allegedly showing water from the moat flowing into the Red Fort complex has sparked concern on social media. (With inputs from PTI)
