In last five years, the maximum amount of Rs 213 crore was collected in 2020 when police had issued 10.99 lakh challans and 85.94 lakh notices

The Delhi Traffic Police generated over Rs 46 crore in revenue in 2024 by issuing more than 74 lakh challans and notices, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In response to a written query on traffic violations across various categories, Rai stated that the city police had issued 23.09 lakh challans and 51.41 lakh notices for traffic offences in 2024, leading to the collection of Rs 46.29 crore.

According to the police, challans are handed out on-site by traffic personnel, while notices are generated online through traffic violation detection cameras.

Over the last five years, the highest amount collected was Rs 213 crore in 2020, when 10.99 lakh challans and 85.94 lakh notices were issued. This was followed by Rs 98.45 crore in 2021 with 13.23 lakh challans and 66.03 lakh notices, Rs 74.46 crore in 2022 with 14.69 lakh challans and 59.87 lakh notices, Rs 46.29 crore in 2024, and Rs 40.31 crore in 2023 with 17.26 lakh challans and 56.53 lakh notices, Rai revealed.

The Delhi Police attributed the rise in traffic violations to increasing vehicular movement in the city and surrounding areas, low awareness among commuters, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

To address the issue, the city police have implemented various awareness initiatives, including road safety programs in schools, colleges, and public spaces; educational sessions for road users and commuters; training programs for both drivers and traffic officers on road safety and accident prevention; and intensified enforcement measures, Rai added.
