He quickly climbed the political ladder, becoming Delhi’s youngest councillor at 27 after winning the 2017 municipal election from East Delhi’s Kalyanpuri ward. His winning streak continued with a victory in the 2020 Assembly election from the Kondli reserved seat. However, he faced a setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, losing from the unreserved East Delhi seat.
Undeterred by the defeat, Kumar returned to campaign aggressively in Kondli, using e-rickshaws with cut-outs of Dr B.R. Ambedkar to appeal to voters.
Born to a migrant worker father from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, who worked as a sanitation worker with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and a homemaker mother, Kumar’s rise in politics reflects his grassroots connection and persistence.
