Delhi polls: Over 770 cases of violating model code of conduct registered

Ahead of the February 5 Delhi assembly elections, over 770 cases of suspected violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) have been filed, as confirmed by an official on Tuesday. These cases were recorded between January 7, when the MCC was enforced, and January 27.

During this period, 24,081 individuals were arrested under various legal provisions, including those under the Excise Act, according to a statement. In preparation for the elections, the police have stepped up surveillance at border checkpoints and conducted operations targeting illegal activities, such as the smuggling of arms, liquor, and drugs.

The Delhi Police have registered 774 cases of alleged MCC violations, confiscating 374 illegal firearms and 453 cartridges. Additionally, the police have seized 68,636 litres of liquor worth over Rs 12 crore, 158.126 kg of drugs valued at more than Rs 72 crore, and over 1,200 banned injections. Law enforcement agencies also recovered Rs 7.60 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver, the statement added.

Voting for all 70 Assembly seats in Delhi will take place on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
