In August, Delhi experienced 378.5 mm of rainfall, the highest for the city in 12 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 378.5 mm of rain up until Thursday, surpassing the previous high of 321.4 mm from August 2013, according to the IMD.
The highest precipitation in the past 15 years occurred in 2010, with 455.1 mm of rainfall, while 2012 saw 378.8 mm, and 2013 recorded 321.4 mm. The August 2023 total exceeded the third-highest mark of 321.4 mm recorded in 2013 on August 29.
The all-time record for August rainfall in Delhi is 583.3 mm, set in 1961, according to IMD data.

Following an early morning shower on Thursday, the Safdarjung Observatory, the city’s main weather station, logged 77 mm of rainfall, bringing the total monsoon season rainfall to 825.5 mm.
This amount already surpasses Delhi’s annual average rainfall of 762.3 mm.
Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services confirmed that Delhi’s annual average rainfall is 762.3 mm, and the city has received 825.5 mm to date.
The IMD has issued a “yellow” alert for Delhi on Thursday, indicating adverse weather conditions that could disrupt daily activities, as per their colour-coded warning system.
The IMD forecasts a cloudy sky with moderate rain for Thursday, with temperatures expected to range between a high of 34 degrees Celsius and a low of 23 degrees Celsius. (With inputs from PTI)
