Sanitation workers and auto-tipper drivers from across Delhi staged a protest at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on Monday, demanding Rs 1 crore compensation and a permanent government job for a member of the family of a 27-year-old sanitation worker who was stabbed to death in Kalyanpuri.

Several workers gathered at the hospital, where the body of Anil was kept, and demanded immediate arrest of the accused, compensation for his family and action against a private company that had engaged him.

Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at the hospital as the protestors raised slogans and refused to allow the family to take the body for the last rites until their demands were met.

“We are demanding Rs 1 crore compensation for the family and a permanent job in MCD for one member of the family,” said Karan Singh Mahroliya, a member of the Delhi Sanitation Workers Union.

“We will not allow the last rites until our demands are met. Auto-tippers will remain off the roads across Delhi,” he said, adding that auto-tippers remained off the roads in several areas as part of the protest.

Anil was stabbed while collecting garbage in Kalyanpuri at around 8.15 am on Sunday. He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police registered a case and identified the accused, who is on the run. Teams are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to ascertain the sequence of events and the motive behind the killing.

Anil was a contractual sanitation worker engaged by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi through a private company. His colleagues had staged a dharna after the incident, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and compensation for his family.

The MCD on Sunday said it would ensure compensation to Anil’s family and that its representatives had visited the family to convey the assurance.
