Delhi residents collectively saved 206 MW of electricity on Saturday night by turning off non-essential lights and appliances during the ‘Earth Hour’, according to discom officials.

The consumers of BSES discoms accounted for 130 MW of the total savings during the Earth Hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, a spokesperson from BSES stated.

“Delhi’s total savings were 206 MW, compared to 279 MW last year,” discom officials noted.

Tata Power-DDL discom consumers contributed by saving 71 MW during Earth Hour 2024, participating in the World Wide Fund (WWF) initiative, a company spokesperson reported.

“We are grateful to all our consumers, including members of resident and industrial welfare associations, for their participation in this initiative,” she added.

The WWF-promoted event aimed to raise awareness about the planet’s fragile condition, officials emphasized.

As part of Earth Hour, Delhi residents joined over a billion people in cities worldwide, including Mumbai, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Manila, Singapore, and Dubai, symbolically demonstrating concern for the environment by switching off non-essential lights and appliances for an hour.
