The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) has increased its PhD fellowship from Rs 37,000 to Rs 60,000 per month, aiming to attract top-tier research talent and bolster India’s innovation ecosystem, the institute announced on Monday.

Alongside the fellowship hike, PhD scholars will benefit from additional financial support, including an annual research contingency grant of Rs 20,000, a one-time laptop grant of Rs 50,000, and Rs 2.5 lakh for professional development, which covers participation in international conferences and workshops. Scholars will also receive up to Rs 1.5 lakh for international research visits, the statement added.

IIIT-Delhi Director Ranjan Bose emphasized the institute’s commitment to high-impact research. “This enhanced fellowship aligns with our vision of attracting the country’s best students, fostering interdisciplinary and industry-relevant research, and empowering scholars to contribute meaningfully to global scientific progress,” he said.

The initiative aims to make academic research a more financially viable option compared to corporate careers. Sumit Darak, Dean (Academic Affairs), underscored the importance of bridging the financial gap between academia and industry. “By ensuring financial security, this move allows PhD scholars to focus entirely on their research without external pressures,” he stated.
