The woman and the victim liked the same man, causing the victim to create a defamatory Facebook account in a bout of jealousy

On Thursday, Delhi Police arrested a woman from northwest Delhi’s Tri Nagar for allegedly creating a fraudulent and obscene Facebook account of her friend to defame her. The woman, a domestic help, did so in a bout of jealousy, the police said. She has been identified as Aaliya Shaikh, 19.

The case came to light when the victim, a 22-year-old woman who works as a nanny, lodged a complaint stating an obscene Facebook profile using her photographs and mobile number is active on the popular social media site. She also stated that unknown numbers had been making obscene calls to her at odd hours.

Aaliya told police that the victim and she liked the same man, and the victim later got into a relationship with him. She became jealous on learning this and hence created a fake profile to defame the victim.

The case was registered on 23 June under sections 500 (punishment for defamation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), following which, an investigation was started.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi, details of the alleged profile were sought to commence the investigation, and the IP addresses and mobile number used in the registration of the alleged profile were obtained to ascertain the identity of the accused.
