The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is actively working on the establishment of 100 debris collection points across the national capital to address and mitigate pollution.
Currently, 35 of these collection points are operational in various zones, with identified locations for an additional 49, as per a statement released by the MCD.
Recognising that construction activity significantly contributes to air pollution in Delhi, the MCD, in collaboration with A-PAG and construction and demolition (C&D) plant concessionaires, has initiated the establishment of debris collection points throughout the city.
In an initial phase, the MCD conducted a successful pilot project in 10 wards of the West zone, introducing three dedicated collection sites.
The outcomes were promising, indicating a notable 46% reduction in illegal dumping of debris, according to the statement. Building on this success, the MCD is actively working to set up nearly 100 collection points across the city for effective management of C&D waste.
Equipped with safeguards such as 12-foot profile sheets, sprinklers, anti-smog guns, and LED signage boards to ensure responsible disposal, these sites allow citizens to deposit up to 20 tonnes of waste daily in each ward. A helpline is also provided for waste collection through the C&D plant concessionaire.
To curb illegal debris dumping, civic departments are engaged in citizen awareness activities and regular sensitization training for waste transporters. The MCD is taking a proactive approach by imposing fines on transporters engaged in unauthorized disposal. Additionally, citizens neglecting proper disposal of C&D waste at designated collection sites may also face fines. Deputy commissioners are conducting fortnightly reviews of C&D waste and collection sites in their respective zones to ensure effective implementation.
