The India Habitat Centre is currently hosting a solo exhibition of acclaimed artist Jaya Ganguly, titled A Retrospective 1982–2025. Opened on 7 October, the exhibition runs until 17 October at the Visual Arts Gallery and Open Palm Court. Curated by Rakhi Sarkar, director of CIMA Kolkata, the show traces Ganguly’s decades-long exploration of women’s experiences, resilience, and defiance in a patriarchal world.
Ganguly’s work transforms personal struggles into universal narratives. Speaking about her approach, she says, “I often seek breakages and destruction which provide me with lasting insight and realisation. My reactions are intuitive, and so is my art.” Her 2020 piece, Untitled, created during the Covid-19 lockdown, reflects the insights and introspection born from isolation.
Her paintings often give voice to marginalised communities, especially women navigating societal oppression. With courage and subversive intent, Ganguly’s art challenges viewers, leaving a lasting impression of both unease and admiration.

Saurabh Singhvi of Art Magnum, which is hosting the exhibition, said Ganguly’s work “resonates with audiences because it challenges, inspires, and engages.” Curator Rakhi Sarkar added, “This exhibition invites people to witness the stories Jaya tells through her powerful visuals and the resilience of the human spirit.”
