Samaria's over 150 artworks highlight the beauty and vulnerability of birds, inspiring all generations to stop, observe, and protect them

Artist, educator, and conservationist Rupa Samaria presents ‘A Bird Call, Northeast India’, an exhibition celebrating the bird species of the Northeast while highlighting the need for their protection.

The northeastern states of India are home to diverse landscapes, ranging from forests and wetlands to hills. This varied terrain supports a wide array of bird species, including the elusive flowerpeckers and tragopans.

Through detailed brushstrokes and storytelling, Samaria brings these birds to life. The exhibition, running from February 25 to March 4 at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, showcases over 150 artworks that capture both the beauty and vulnerability of these birds.

“We want to encourage a deeper understanding of the role birds play in maintaining ecological balance while showcasing the rare and essential species of the region,” said Samaria.

Her interest in conservation began in childhood during visits to Darjeeling, where she observed flora and fauna coexisting in harmony. Her work—spanning watercolours, acrylics, charcoal, sculpture, and interactive installations—reflects her deep connection to the region and its birdlife.
