Latitude 28 Gallery is hosting a new exhibition titled Fragile, showcasing the works of three young artists including Al-Qawi Nanavati, Dola Shikder, and Purvi Sharma. Running from July 31 to August 18, 2024, the exhibition explores themes of vulnerability, identity, and the complexity of human emotions.
Al-Qawi Nanavati, one of the featured artists, delves into personal experiences of loss through her art. Her series, Letters to My Mother, reflects her journey of coping with the sudden death of her mother. Using printmaking, painting, and drawing, Al-Qawi creates pieces that are deeply personal yet universally relatable.
“Losing my mother changed everything,” said Nanavati. “Art became a way to communicate with her, to express emotions I couldn’t put into words. Each piece in this series is a letter, a conversation with her that continues even in her absence.”
Dola Shikder, a student at MSU Baroda, uses her art to explore the feminine experience and cultural identity. Her work, Myths of Belonging, challenges traditional narratives by weaving together textiles, paint, and multimedia.
“Through my art, I aim to question and redefine the stories we tell about women and identity,” Shikder explained. “It’s about finding a place where personal and cultural myths intersect.”
Purvi Sharma’s sculptures focus on the mundane aspects of daily life and the impact of digital media on mental health. Her art transforms uncertainty into tangible forms, inviting viewers to find beauty and meaning in the ordinary.
“In today’s fast-paced digital world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed,” Sharma said. “My work is an attempt to pause, reflect, and find solace in the simplicity of everyday life.”
Each artist in Fragile brings a unique perspective to the exhibition, highlighting the diverse ways individuals navigate their personal journeys. The exhibition aims to offer visitors a chance to engage with contemporary themes and reflect on their own experiences.
