Nature Morte Gallery is set to host the debut solo exhibition of Mumbai-based artist Aaditi Joshi in New Delhi, titled Tensile Dimensions. The exhibition will run from September 21 to October 26 with a special preview on September 20.
Aaditi Joshi, who has garnered attention for her innovative use of recycled plastics, brings a fresh perspective to contemporary art. For years, Joshi has focused her artistic practice on transforming discarded plastics into meaningful works of art. “Plastics are destroying humanity and the planet,” Joshi said, “yet they’ve also made modern life possible. My work explores this contradiction”.
In Tensile Dimensions, Joshi focuses specifically on polypropylene bags—those white woven bags commonly seen at construction sites, used for storing and transporting sand and concrete. These bags, for Joshi, symbolise more than just functionality; they are a medium for her vibrant expression of colour and form. The artist meticulously dismantles and washes the bags before manipulating them into low-relief, textured surfaces. “I approach these bags as found textiles, transforming them into something that resembles an alien landscape,” Joshi added. The undulating surface of her work is highlighted by her sensitive application of paint, giving the impression of an otherworldly topography.

Joshi’s creative process is a balance of structure and spontaneity, synthesising elements of painting, collage, sculpture, and textile art. Her compositions challenge conventional art forms, reflecting her unique ability to handle diverse textures and materials.
Born in 1980, Aaditi Joshi’s work is deeply influenced by her surroundings in Mumbai. She often pauses by the city’s rugged, surreal urban landscapes of discarded plastics, reflecting on the environmental and social issues they present. “I’m both disturbed and inspired by these materials,” she said, “and incorporating them into my practice feels like a way to give them new life”.
