According to the latest government figures, 1.7 lakh women were raped between 2012 and 2016— which translates to an average of four women being sexually assaulted every hour over that span.

A 2017 survey revealed that 40% of transgender people faced some sort of sexual abuse before turning 18.

The survey, conducted by Swasti Health Resource Centre — a Bangalore-based non-profit group, interviewed 2,169 transgender people in three states: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It concluded that sexual abuse begins as early as age five, and continues beyond childhood.

WORKPLACE HARASSMENT

The Second Indian LGBT Workplace Climate Survey was conducted by Godrej India Culture Lab along with MINGLE (Mission for Indian Gay & Lesbian Empowerment). With the aim of assessing the workplace environment vis-à-vis LGBT employees in corporate India. It shows just how much work needs to be done in the pursuit of LGBT equality at Indian workplaces. Employees of 18 multinational companies from sectors like IT, Banking and Manufacturing were surveyed for this.

PERCEPTION OF HOMOSEXUALITY


Between 1990 and 2014, the percentage of Indians in the World Value Survey who believed that “homosexuality is never justifiable” fell from 89% to 24%.

FAMILIARITY OF INDIANS WITH LGBTQ

According to the survey, 29 per cent of respondents in the country had acquaintances in the LGBTQ community, while 39 per cent did not have any.

HIV/AIDS
The sections of the Indian population most affected by HIV are sex workers (HIV prevalence of 2.2%), gay men and MSM (HIV prevalence of 4.3%), people who inject drugs (HIV prevalence of 9.9%) and transgender people (HIV prevalence of 7.2%).

ONLINE DATING 
With internet and smartphone penetration on the rise in India, the LGBTQ community is increasingly taking to online dating sites to mingle. Already, around 1.4% or 69,000 of the five million users of US gay dating app Grindr and nearly 3% or 92,000 users of German app Planet Romeo’s three million users are in India.
