Reigning Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra becomes the first Indian male to win a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships with his javelin throw of 88.13 m. Chopra’s silver medal in the second World Championships medal for India – the first was a bronze medal for Anju Bobby George in the long jump in 2003.
Neeraj’s historic throw came in the fourth attempt after he struggled a bit initially. Anderson Peters of Grenada won the gold medal with three 90m+ throws and a final hurl of 90.54 in his last attempt. Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia won the bronze with a 88.09m throw, just a little behind of Chopra.
During the press conference held after the finals, Chopra stated, “It may have seemed easy to you but he put in a lot of effort. It was challenging for everyone today. It was a different sort of challenge in the Olympics, so challenging for him that he couldn’t get into the final. It is not nice to compare athletes like this, everyone’s body is different and they react differently.”
Neeraj Chopra has changed the landscape of Indian athletics, presenting India in a new light when it comes to competing sports. Needless to say, several dignitaries and celebrities took to Twitter to praise the young athlete and celebrate his historic victory at the World Championship that is currently being held in Oregon, USA.
