Two of The Patriot’s reports published in 2021 have been felicitated with the Laadli Media Awards 2022 Regional for promoting good journalism.
While the story ‘Unsafe at home and outside: A conundrum of women’s safety in the Capital’ by Sashikala VP & Mayank has been awarded under the category Print Article, ‘Lockdown worsens menstrual hygiene for girls in Delhi slums’ by Mayank and Nikita Jain has been honoured with ‘Jury Appreciation Citation’.
Nikita Jain and Mayank had set out to find the hygiene situation of women on-ground during the harsh lockdown imposed to check the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. What they discovered was a state of despair. From lack of awareness to proper access to sanitary napkins – menstrual hygiene in the Capital city is in shambles. More so, amid a global pandemic – when lockdown deters school going girls to have easy access to pads, and the right knowledge on their monthly cycle.
On the other hand, reporters Sashikala VP and Mayank visits Peera Garhi relief camp to see how women live – with fear looming all around. One common thing that Patriot found was reluctance of women to report crimes. The story was a follow up of a report that found crime against women and children – from rape to abduction — in Delhi’s Outer District to be one of the highest recorded over the last three years.
The award ceremony was held after a hiatus of two years as an on-ground event at MANUU, Hyderabad on 2 November. The event was broadcast live on Youtube.
Laadli, the media advocacy campaign of Population First, has been giving Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) for gender sensitive journalism since 2007. The awards are supported by UNFPA & Norwegian Embassy New Delhi.
