After an illustrious career as a top batsman and team leader, Rohit Sharma is reportedly considering his future in ODIs after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, regardless of the outcome. If India secures victory against New Zealand, Rohit could become the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles. However, this could also mark his final appearance in India colours in the 50-over format.
According to BCCI sources, Rohit is expected to discuss his future with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar post-tournament. In Indian cricket, decisions about senior players’ futures are often made through mutual understanding between the player and the board, not solely by the selectors.

Rohit’s absence from the pre-final press conference suggests he wants to avoid retirement queries. His deputy, Shubman Gill, also downplayed the matter, stating that “no discussions on retirement” have taken place.
Rohit’s situation is different from Virat Kohli’s. Both announced their T20I retirements after the T20 World Cup, but Kohli is still focused on Tests, aiming to reach 10,000 Test runs. Rohit’s future in Tests, however, remains uncertain. If he plays the England series, he could aim for a farewell at home during the West Indies Tests, part of the next World Test Championship cycle.
India’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) shows no home ODIs until December against South Africa, except for away series in Bangladesh, the Asia Cup (in Sri Lanka), and Australia. If Rohit doesn’t see himself continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, this Champions Trophy could be his ODI swansong. A clearer picture is expected after the final.
