Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has instructed municipal officials to undertake a comprehensive renovation of roads, sidewalks, parks, and sewerage and drainage systems in the eastern parts of Delhi, as per reports received on Sunday.
The Lt Governor’s office will closely monitor the progress of this work, insisting on photographic or video evidence with each status report.
This directive followed Saxena’s recent visits to various locations in East Delhi, including Shashtri Park, Mansarovar Park, Seelampur, Shyam Lal College, Karkardooma, Surajmal Park, and Dilshad Garden. During these visits, he pointed out the poor conditions of roads, sanitation, encroachments, and blocked drains, instructing civic agencies to commence immediate improvements.
Officials stated that the LG Secretariat will oversee daily work progress, with a strict requirement for “before and after” photographs to accompany any agency’s progress report. Saxena emphasised the need for concerned agencies like MCD, PWD, DDA, and DJB to resolve jurisdictional issues promptly to avoid delays.
During his visit, which lasted over three hours, Saxena expressed visible dissatisfaction with the deteriorated state of Yudhishthir Setu, including damaged railings and pavements, posing risks to pedestrians and two-wheelers. At Karkardooma Court Complex, he was displeased with the overflowing drain, dusty streets and sidewalks, broken footpaths, and obstructive overgrown trees affecting traffic flow.
Saxena also engaged with residents and RWAs in these areas, who shared concerns about overflowing sewer lines, congested drains, deteriorating roads, and sidewalks, among other issues. Officials noted that Saxena expressed frustration that the civic agencies had ignored these densely populated areas for years, leading people to endure subpar living conditions.
The Lt Governor reaffirmed his commitment to rejuvenating East Delhi regions that have long suffered due to government neglect. (With inputs from PTI)
