A Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector allegedly suffered a gunshot wound to the head while on duty at a picket in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur area, according to officials on Saturday.

ASI Ramavtar and Sub-Inspector Prem Singh were assigned to night picket duty at BP Marg, an official stated.

“At 3 am, Ramavtar informed Prem Singh that he intended to take a 10-minute break and proceeded to sit in his car, which was parked near the barricade,” the official explained.

Upon returning after some time, Prem Singh discovered Ramavtar deceased with a gunshot injury to his head, the official mentioned, noting that his service revolver was found nearby.

Another official revealed that Ramavtar, originally from Mahendergarh, Haryana, had joined the force in 1993 and was presently stationed at Kotla Mubarakpur police station.

The ASI’s family has been notified of his demise, the officer confirmed. The motive behind the incident is currently under investigation, he added. (With inputs from PTI)
