Delhi Police has arrested a 27-year-old man and recovered 59 spools of banned Chinese manjha from his possession in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur, officials said on Friday.

The accused, Md Shakir, a resident of New Seelampur, was arrested during a patrolling operation based on a tip-off about the illegal sale of the hazardous kite string, they said.

According to the police, the recovery was made on July 1 during routine patrol. Police received specific information about a person selling Chinese manjha in New Seelampur.

Acting on the input, the police team laid a trap at the spot and intercepted the suspect carrying a carton.

Upon checking the carton, the police recovered 59 spools of Chinese manjha, which is banned due to its hazardous nature and its role in causing injuries and fatal accidents.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that he had procured the consignment from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh for sale in the local market.

A case under relevant sections of the BNS has been registered at Seelampur police station. Further investigation is underway to trace the source and supply chain of the banned material, the police said.

The accused has no previous criminal record.
