Delhi Election Results: In a high-stakes battle for Delhi’s political throne, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered its biggest electoral setback, not only losing the right to govern the capital but also witnessing its convenor and former Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, lose his New Delhi seat. Seeking a fourth consecutive term from the constituency, Kejriwal was defeated by former BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma by over 3,000 votes.

With the BJP, AAP, and Congress fielding their top leaders in New Delhi, the constituency emerged as the most crucial among the 70 Assembly seats in the 2025 elections.

The New Delhi Assembly constituency, located in the heart of the national capital, saw a fierce three-way contest between AAP, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress.

Besides Kejriwal, BJP’s two-time MP Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, and Congress’ former MP Sandeep Dikshit, son of three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, were in the fray.

Verma emerges victorious, BJP celebrates

Emerging as the biggest winner of the election, Verma rushed to meet Union Home Minister and BJP’s star campaigner, Amit Shah, at his residence. Grand celebrations unfolded at the BJP headquarters and Gole Market polling station, where Verma greeted jubilant supporters.

By the end of the 12th round of counting (out of 13), Verma had established a lead of over 3,000 votes, while Kejriwal’s tally stood at 24,583. Verma is now expected to be a key contender for the position of Delhi’s Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit trailed in third place with just 4,254 votes as of mid-day. According to the Election Commission, the 13th and final round of counting was yet to be concluded at the time of reporting.

“In our party, the legislative members decide on the chief ministerial candidate, Whatever the party leadership decides will be accepted by all.”

“The best thing is that the government can work in tandem with PM Modi. This will bring PM Modi’s vision to Delhi. I attribute this win to him. I would like to thank the people of Delhi—this is a win for all Delhiites, a win for PM Modi,” said Verma when trends indicated a decisive BJP victory in Delhi.

“Our key priorities will include providing Rs 2,500 to women, setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe corruption, developing the Yamuna riverfront, tackling pollution, and easing traffic congestion. We aim to build a capital that every citizen will take pride in,” Verma added.

Union Home Minister and BJP’s top campaigner in Delhi polls Amit Shah hailed the party’s win, declaring, “Modi is in the heart of Delhi. This is the new beginning of Delhi. This is an AAP’DA-free Delhi now.”

Kejriwal’s campaign and AAP’s claims

The New Delhi Assembly constituency also witnessed high-voltage drama during the election campaign. Kejriwal urged citizens to vote for AAP, banking on his governance model of free electricity, free education, and other welfare schemes. He warned that if the BJP came to power, it would discontinue these benefits.

During the campaign, Kejriwal’s convoy was attacked when a stone hit his car. He alleged that this was the handiwork of BJP “goons” who feared electoral defeat.

Hitting back, the BJP dismissed Kejriwal’s claims, calling them a desperate attempt by AAP to defame the party amid fears of losing the election.

Key campaign issues

Verma’s campaign focused heavily on providing housing for JJ cluster residents under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’. The BJP, however, faced accusations of distributing money to women voters in the constituency—an allegation Verma rejected, stating that his NGO regularly undertakes welfare initiatives for citizens.

Congress candidate Dikshit, meanwhile, sought to revive voter confidence by reminding them of the development work undertaken during Sheila Dikshit’s tenure. He argued that since Congress lost power, the AAP government had failed to address issues such as traffic congestion, rising unemployment, and poor civic planning, leading to Delhi becoming a “mess.”

Issues faced by New Delhi residents

The New Delhi Assembly constituency, home to key administrative and commercial landmarks such as Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and Connaught Place, also houses diverse residential areas ranging from elite enclaves to JJ clusters. Despite its prominence, the constituency grapples with several civic issues that affect residents daily.
