CM mourns minor’s death in a accident, highlights long-standing issues caused by roadside encroachments affecting residents and commuters

Delhi: Following two road accidents in the Shalimar Bagh area in the last two months that killed two minors, chief minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said over 140 illegal constructions would be removed from the area.

Expressing grief over the death of a minor in a road accident, the chief minister said due to the encroachments along the roadside, residents, vehicles, and pedestrians passing through this area face considerable inconvenience for a long time.

A five-year-old girl died after being hit by a speeding dumper two months ago, she said.

“The chances of such fatal accidents would have been reduced if there had been no encroachment,” she said.

Another road accident was reported here on Saturday.

According to the Delhi Police, on Saturday evening, two minors riding a motorcycle had an accident.

They said illegal encroachments along the drain and the roadside narrow the road, causing accidents.

“One minor was killed today. Saturday’s accident could have been avoided if there had been no illegal encroachments along the roadside,” Gupta said in a statement.

She said these encroachments occurred on government land during the previous government.

“Recently, the Delhi High Court issued directions to remove more than 140 illegal units located on Road No 320 in this area. Meanwhile, a tempo coming from behind hit the motorcycle, resulting in the death of one minor on the spot,” Gupta said.

She said once these encroachments are removed, traffic from North Delhi will move more smoothly, and vehicles will be able to directly access the Outer Ring Road from the Ring Road.
