The expected peak power demand of 9,000 MW this year is an increase of more than 300 percent over the peak power demand of 2,879 MW in 2002

Delhi peak power demand is projected to reach 9,000 MW in the upcoming summer months, driven by increased consumption, according to discom officials.

In 2024, the capital recorded an all-time high peak demand of 8,656 MW. To address this surge, power distribution companies are implementing multiple measures, including network strengthening and thermo-scanning to detect potential hotspots, a BSES official said.

“Over 2,100 MW of green energy will play a crucial role in maintaining an uninterrupted power supply during the summer,” the official added.

Last year, Delhi’s peak demand crossed 8,000 MW for the first time. The city had previously breached the 7,000 MW mark in 2018, reaching 7,016 MW. Since then, the demand has consistently increased.
