A 31-year-old man was arrested in southwest Delhi for allegedly deceiving people with promises of bank jobs, police said.

The accused, Vishal Ahuja, arrested on Wednesday, holds a diploma and previously worked at KFC and Pizza Hut before an accident forced him to leave his job last year, according to a police officer.

“After recovering, he sought employment and fell victim to fraud himself,” the officer explained.

He allegedly replicated the same scheme to defraud others, authorities added.

Ahuja, residing in Uttam Nagar, utilized the WorkIndia Job Portal to disseminate false advertisements for banking assistant and data entry operator positions, stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Rohit Meena.

“Through WhatsApp, he would deceive job-seekers with verification fees, demo fees, interview fees, etc.,” Meena elaborated.

Additionally, Ahuja purportedly fabricated offer letters, appointment letters, and confirmation letters from HDFC Bank, altering candidates’ names using online PDF editors, Meena noted.

Posing as a bank’s HR representative, he allegedly opened bank accounts for victims, acquiring their KYC documents and biometrics, and exploited these accounts to defraud others.

The scam unraveled when Sagar Ranga, one of the victims, lodged a complaint after Ahuja, posing as an HDFC bank employee, swindled Rs 6,800 from him, promising a job for his wife, an officer disclosed.

The investigation revealed Ahuja’s involvement in two other cheating cases, the officer added.(With inputs from PTI)
