At least seven individuals sustained injuries following an explosion and a significant fire at a chemical factory in Delhi’s Bawana area on Sunday, police said.
The condition of three of the injured is critical, they added.
“A report of a fire at a factory in Sector 1, Bawana industrial area was received at 3:04 pm. Twenty fire-tenders were deployed to extinguish the flames,” said Atul Garg, Chief of Delhi Fire Services (DFS).
Nine individuals were rescued from the factory and promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving medical attention. Garg mentioned that the fire has been successfully brought under control.
According to police sources, the hospital reported seven medico-legal cases (MLCs), with three patients in critical condition.
Identified by authorities, the critically injured individuals are Kuldeep (18), Bablu (25), and Mastram (20).
“All three have been transferred to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment. The remaining injured individuals, identified as Suresh, Rakesh, Pankaj Pal, and Ghan Shyam, are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” stated a police officer.
The officer also mentioned that, according to the factory owner, Sunil Kumar, no other individuals were trapped inside. However, confirmation will be provided post the completion of the operation and cooling process.
Initial investigations indicate that the workers were operating a machine when a spark from a short circuit ignited the chemicals stored nearby.
The officer confirmed that legal actions are being pursued against the factory owner. (With inputs from PTI)
