Mangalotsav: A musical evening

The event is a tribute to Girija Devi—affectionately known as Appa ji—who is celebrated for her lifelong dedication to the Banaras gharana and her transformative influence on Indian classical music

A special concert titled Mangalotsav will be held at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, on Thursday, May 8, to mark the 96th birth anniversary of the legendary Hindustani classical vocalist, Padma Vibhushan Dr Vidushi Girija Devi. Organised by the Girija-Darshan Trust, the musical evening is open to the public with free entry on a first-come, first-served basis through Gate No. 3.

The event is a tribute to Girija Devi—affectionately known as Appa ji—who is celebrated for her lifelong dedication to the Banaras gharana and her transformative influence on Indian classical music. The concert aims to both commemorate her immense contribution and introduce her legacy to younger generations and music enthusiasts who may not have experienced her artistry firsthand.

The evening will feature a vocal and flute jugalbandi by Vidushi Sunanda Sharma and Pt. Rupak Kulkarni, accompanied by Pandit Mithilesh Kumar Jha on tabla and Pandit Sumit Mishra on harmonium. The second performance will present Padma Bhushan Pandit Sajan Misra and Swaransh Misra in a Hindustani vocal recital, supported by Pandit Vinod Lele on tabla and Pandit Vinay Mishra on harmonium.

Organisers describe the event as “a heartfelt expression of gratitude” and “an offering in remembrance of a true legend”. Artists performing have been carefully chosen for their alignment with the values Girija Devi championed—devotion to tradition, depth of expression, and musical integrity.
