Android 16: Google has officially unveiled Android 16, its newest mobile operating system, aiming to elevate smartphone user experience through design upgrades and AI-powered functionalities. Seang Chau, Vice President and General Manager of the Android Platform, announced the rollout on June 12, highlighting the OS’s focus on enhanced customisation, improved accessibility, and stronger security.

Android 16 introduces a refined visual language built on Google’s Material 3 Expressive design. One of the standout features includes grouped notifications, which allow all alerts from a particular app to appear together, making it easier for users to manage information. Real-time updates will remain active, keeping users informed as events unfold.

Audio functionality also receives a boost, with enhanced microphone controls promising clearer audio capture—even in loud environments. A notable inclusion is the new active device control feature, designed specifically to improve connectivity with hearing aids and similar devices.

On the security front, Android 16 debuts an Advanced Protection Mode, which Google describes as its most comprehensive mobile security tool yet. The feature aims to guard users against cyber risks such as malicious apps, phishing attempts, and fraudulent calls.

Another major enhancement is the integration of Gemini AI, which powers several intelligent tools including HDR screenshots, smarter refresh rate adjustments, and real-time identity verification. These upgrades aim to personalise the experience while improving system efficiency.

The update is currently rolling out to select Google Pixel devices, with broader availability expected for other Android brands in the coming weeks.
