The Huawei Pura 80 series smartphones will most likely be powered by the Kirin 9020 chipset and run on HarmonyOS 5 out of the box

Huawei is set to launch its new Pura 80 series along with a range of smart products on June 11 at 2:30 PM (local time) in China. A recent teaser poster shared on Weibo hints at a strong focus on mobile photography, showing a close-up of a dual-camera setup.

The upcoming Pura 80 lineup is expected to include four models — Standard, Pro, Pro Plus, and Ultra. These devices are likely to be powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9020 chipset and will run on HarmonyOS 5. Unlike earlier versions, this new iteration of HarmonyOS is no longer based on Android’s open-source platform, although it can still support some Android apps through a virtual machine.

Huawei accidentally gave a sneak peek of the Pura 80 Ultra during the launch of its Maextro S800 smart car. The device shown had a triangular rear camera module, similar to its predecessor.

In terms of photography, the Pura 80 series appears to be aiming high. Leaks suggest the Ultra variant will feature a 50MP dual-periscope telephoto lens, placed centrally in the camera module, along with Huawei’s own SmartSens SC5A0CS 1-inch sensor and a 2MP colour temperature sensor.

This isn’t Huawei’s first attempt with a dual periscope system. The company previously used a similar setup in the P40 Pro Plus, released in 2020. While the standard Pura 80 may retain the same camera hardware as its predecessor, new AI enhancements are expected to boost image quality.

As with some of its previous launches, Huawei is expected to begin pre-orders for the Pura 80 series shortly after the Dragon Boat Festival, which concludes on June 2. The devices are expected to hit the market in July.
