Anjolie Ela Menon captures the nuances and magic of motherhood in her complex rendering of intimacy and transcendence

Vadehra Art Gallery presents “Nostalgia”, a recent body of paintings by renowned artist Anjolie Ela Menon. The exhibition will be on display at Vadehra Art Gallery from December 23, 2022, to January 30, 2023. Menon’s oeuvre is centered around a triptych celebrating the Divine Mothers – Parvati, Mariam and Yashoda.

The artist is intrigued by the aesthetics of mythology and creates a unique visual language in her portrayal of these protagonists, as she drapes the goddesses with free-flowing hair and contemporary garments, making a departure from conventional iconography. She captures the nuances and magic of motherhood in her complex rendering of intimacy and transcendence, showing Yashoda with Krishna, Mariam holding infant Jesus, and Parvati with Ganesh – exploring the powerful and personal storytelling quality of myth.

The tryptych is enclosed in a huge, beautifully carved jharoka that she salvaged from a junkyard, adding layers of significance to her juxtapositions and intensifying the drama of her presentation.

Menon was awarded the Padma Shree in 2000, the Chevalier des Arts from France and a doctorate from Rabindra Bharati University.  She has shown a mastery over colour, in her techniques and in her usage of various media.  Besides paintings she has created incredible sculptures in Murano glass.

Menon’s prolific output has resulted in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. Her works have been acquired by major museums in India and abroad and embellish both private and corporate collections. She is also well known for her murals and has represented India at the Algiers Biennale and in Sao Paulo Biennale.

Solo exhibitions include the Winston Gallery, Washington, USA; Doma Khudozhinkov, U.S.S.R; Rabindra Bhavan and Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi,  several shows in New York , Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta, and a major solo exhibition at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco in 2006.
