Artisera is set to present Aksharscape, a solo exhibition of contemporary calligraphy by Mumbai-based artist Nikheel Aphale, at Bikaner House from May 28 to June 1. This marks Aphale’s first solo showcase in the capital and brings his distinctive interpretation of the Devanagari script to one of Delhi’s most prominent cultural venues.
Rooted in the ancient Devanagari script, Aksharscape explores letters not merely as linguistic units, but as abstract visual forms that evoke memory, emotion, and cultural reflection. Aphale’s work bridges traditional script with contemporary expression, pushing the boundaries of calligraphy into the realm of fine art.
“We are thrilled to present Nikheel Aphale’s first-ever solo exhibition in Delhi, that too at a prestigious venue like Bikaner House,” said Varun Backliwal, Founder of Artisera. “Nikheel’s work is fresh and contemporary, while still being strongly rooted in Indian culture. We believe he is an artist to watch out for in the years to come.”
Aphale, who began his serious pursuit of calligraphy in 2006, draws inspiration from the underrepresented aesthetic potential of the Devanagari script—used in languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit and Nepali. “Unlike Japanese, Persian, or Chinese calligraphy, Devanagari was never fully developed as a fine art form,” he noted. This realisation drove him to devote his practice to showcasing the script’s artistic and spiritual richness.

His connection to Delhi runs deep. “I lived and worked in Delhi for 12 years, until 2018,” he said. “The city helped me grow as an artist, exposing me to different worldviews and aesthetics. My calligraphy literally flourished in Delhi, and I am overjoyed to have my first solo exhibition here.”
