The body of the man was pulled out of the 40-foot-deep borewell of the DJB sewage treatment plant in Keshopur Mandi after a nearly 12-hour-long operation on Sunday

The Delhi Jal Board is set to issue updated guidelines on managing borewells, including improving their sealing to prevent incidents like the recent tragedy in Keshopur Mandi, where a man tragically lost his life after falling into one, sources revealed on Monday.

While initial reports suggested the borewell, into which the 30-year-old man fell, was abandoned, sources clarified that it was indeed secured and locked.

In a proactive measure to prevent such mishaps, teams from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) are conducting thorough inspections of all borewells, they added.

The victim was retrieved from the 40-foot-deep borewell at the DJB sewage treatment plant in Keshopur Mandi following a grueling 12-hour operation on Sunday.

“The borewell was adequately secured and locked. However, to avert future incidents, all other borewells are undergoing inspections. Furthermore, we are drafting comprehensive guidelines for better management and sealing of these borewells,” a source within the DJB informed PTI.

In connection with the tragic incident, the police have filed an FIR against an unidentified individual under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for negligence leading to death.

“An FIR has been lodged at the Vikaspuri police station under IPC Section 304A. We will conduct a thorough investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer.  (With inputs from PTI)
