A solo exhibition titled ‘Miles Ahead… And More To Travel’ by Sushma Yadav will be presented at 1 Basement, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi, from March 10 to 30 at 10:30 am to 7 pm.
Curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, the exhibition is a pictorial journey of a woman artist as she navigates emotional and physical realms, oscillating between the external world and the inner self.
The etchings invite viewers to take a journey with her as she explores the depths of the human experience. Her works capture the essence of emotional complexity and convey the nuances of the human psyche with sensitivity. Through her art, Yadav depicts the many layers of human existence – from mundane to the extraordinary.
Yadav’s detailed and minute, almost mathematical, pre-planning delicately synergizes with creative, intuitive genius.
“Etching is a black and white medium and I saw everything in two parts so much so that I dream also in two tones,” says Yadav.
The etchings elaborate a breath-taking array of a woman’s world.
Yadav, in many of her prints, depicts the kitchen scenes. Also significant is the coexistence of a buffet or a meal in the same view as the kitchen where the meal is prepared.
The ease with which women’s lingerie is displayed as hanging on the clotheslines is also noteworthy. These then turn into significant symbols of the insertion of the private realms (where women are subjugated) into the public sphere.
Moreover, a foregrounding of the hidden and the private female undergarments hitherto associated with shame is reversed as they become a part of the sacredness.
