National School of Drama (NSD) presents ‘Bheem Gatha’, a student theatre production, which will be performed from May 13-16 at 6.30 pm at Abhimanch Auditorium in the NSD premises. There will also be an additional show on May 14 and 15 at 3.00 pm.
The play ‘Bheem Gatha’ is designed and directed by Vidushi Rita Ganguly and the playwright is Shri Asif Ali. It revolves around the character of Pandav Bheem, who is portrayed as a powerful character in the Mahabharata. The drama explores the unexplored aspects of Bheem’s character and presents a more nuanced portrayal. He is shown to be a loyal and obedient person who always protects his family. As someone who is committed to his ideals and possesses the knowledge of what is right and
wrong, he is always ready to protect the weak, even at the cost of his own life, the play narrates.
As the characters of Mahabharata are often complex and multifaceted, the play also shows strengths and weaknesses of Bheem.
In the war of Mahabharata, Bhima is introduced as the most powerful warrior. He inflicts the most damage to the Kaurava army, kills Dushasana, breaks Duryodhana’s thighs to kill him, and keeps his promise to Draupadi. Bhima is mighty and invincible,
but his heart is very tender. He beats for the protection of the oppressed and their rights. Bhima is a victor, but he is always alone, observes the production team.
