Forty percent of pillion riders on two-wheelers in Delhi were found not using helmets, leading to head injuries, according to data collected in 2022 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
However, the data also revealed that nearly 85 percent of two-wheeler riders wore helmets, while the remaining did not use protective gear, resulting in head injuries leading to mortality or morbidity, AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr Kamran Farooque said.
The data was gathered at the center from January 21 to December 22.
Dr Farooque further highlighted that approximately 82 percent of patients who were brought dead to the hospital in 2022 were victims of road accidents.
In 2022, the hospital attended to 53,541 trauma patients, with around 25 percent being victims of road accidents.
Dr. Farooque emphasised that most road accident victims belonged to the age group of 20 to 40 years, a segment crucial to the economy due to their productivity. Their involvement in accidents not only affects their families but also impacts the country’s economy significantly.
He stressed the need for an organised system to ensure immediate help and treatment for road accident victims. (With inputs from PTI)
